How the best oat milk taste test worked

Six members of the olive team conducted a blind taste test to find the most flavoursome shop-bought oat milk. We tasted all of the biggest brands widely available in the UK. The group chose an overall winner and a runner-up.

Winner:

Provamel organic oat drink

About the oat milk: This oat drink contains 12% oats, water, sunflower oil, dietary fibre and sea salt. It has no added sugar and is suitable for vegans.

Comments: With a rich oat flavour and natural sweetness, this creamy oat drink would be great on its own or poured over cereal.

Runner-up:

Alpro longlife oat milk alternative

About the oat milk: Made with 10% oats, water, sunflower oil and vitamins, this oat drink has no added sugar and is suitable for vegans.

Comments: This is the best dairy-free milk alternative if you want the thick texture of milk. It had a nice mouthfeel and works as well as dairy milk over cereal.

Oatly oat drink

About the oat milk: Made with these 10% Swedish oats, water, rapeseed oil and vitamins, this oat drink is free from lactose and soya.

Comments: The yellow colour of this oat milk was off-putting, it was a bit blander than others we tried with a slightly syrupy mouthfeel.

Oatly Oat Drink

Rude Health longlife unsweetened oat drink

About the oat milk: This oat drink is made from 11% organic pure oats, spring water and sea salt. It’s gluten and lactose-free and suitable for vegans.

Comments: This drink had a biscuity aroma with notes of oat, however it was too thin for our liking.

Innocent oat dairy alternative milk

About the oat milk: A blend of 15% oats, spring water and sea salt, this oat milk is free from diary and suitable for vegans.

Comments: This milk alternative was a little too sweet for some of the tasters, and had a slightly bitter aftertaste. We found the consistency to be a little too thin.

Plenish organic oat dairy free milk

About the oat milk: A blend of water, 11% organic oats and sea salt, this unsweetened oat milk is suitable for vegans.

Comments: This dairy-free milk had a rich oat flavour and pleasant appearance, however it was too watery for us.
